The Wire Players Dirty Dozen Volume V; March 16, 2010

Who will win the Derby? Who knows, but this sure is fun. Steve from Wireplayers.com has again released this below, the fifth version of the Top 12 poll.

Readers of The Turk know that he doesn't pay much attention to the 2 YOs. Sure I read about them a bit, but I don't bet them and I don't study them. In some ways that helps my handicapping and in other ways it hurts me: I don't get too wrapped up with the hype of great 2 YOs that don't always translate well into 3 YOs, yet I sometimes miss the excitement of great 2YOs that don't run until mid March and when they do, Wow!

There are only three more editions of this poll before the first Saturday in May. It's 55 degrees in Buffalo today. The sun is shining. Yeah, I'm excited.

Hey Turk, thanks for posting the "Dirty Dozen" and being a contributing panelist.

I just saw the draw and ML for the FL Derby. They've got Rule as the 5/2 favorite, but I think Miner's Reserve (6-1), Ice Box (15-1), and Soaring Empire (20-1) can all out-run their odds quite a bit. Should be a good betting race.

Look forward to hearing you analysis.

Thanks Steve, I enjoy participating. I'm playing Gulfstream hard this weekend. These are tough races to handicap: Rule deserves the chalk but is vulnerable. With 3 YOs in March you know they are vulnerable but you have to take a position against them with horses that aren't anywhere near as accomplished as a horse like Rule. a real horse player dilema.

Thanks for reading.

I think Steve's right about the running odds. Especially with Soaring Empire, if he runs a big one that's a great value.
I'm not sure what to make of Lentenor in the FL Derby yet. It would be fantastic if won the same Barbaro did.
