Post Race Reviews with Video of Grade 3 Nashville Derby and Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap

Little Turk gets engaged

Welcome Friends to The Turk Blog. On Saturday I handicapped what I thought were the two most interesting turf races of the day, the $3.5 MM Nashville Derby G3 and The Del Mar Handicap G2.

I wasn't able to enjoy the races as much as I would have liked as I had a more pressing family matter.  My son, affectionally known here as "The Little Turk" is little no more.  A grown man at 26, a Doctor  of Chiropractic medicine, and now engaged to the love of his life, Shajwan.  We spent a lovely afternoon with the couple and her parents as Little Turk proposed, before going out to dinner to celebrate.

The Turk has had a good life.  I've worked for good people at good jobs, I've been blessed and given anything a father and husband could need by this material world, but seeing my son get engaged and see him become an adult and a man was precious, and I appreciate the time God has given me, as none of us are guaranteed the next day.

Anyways, today's blog post is dedicated to Little Turk and Shajwan, may life be as good to them as it has been to me.

On a personal note, the Turk is starting to sense the end of his working career coming.  As I turn 60 next year, I know I only have a few more years of work life ahead of me.  This blog has been a labor of love since September 2008.  I've rededicated myself to it and to making it the best possible.  I've been using AI to help build charts and graphs, which perhaps doesn't save a lot of time, but I like the visualizations and I think others will too.  Blogs are a tough sell this day and age, especially specialty blogs like mine.  I hate that term "tout."  I'm not "touting" anything, I'm describing a rather intricate and detailed way I build positive ROI by focusing on a small group of races weekly versus whole cards.  I could never be in a handicapping tournament, its a very different skill set.  I spend as much as 90 mins- 2 hours on a single race sometimes, and I don't do this for the money, so while I win regularly on my exacta betting, this is not a retirement tranche of income, again, a labor of love.    I'd love for you to follow me on X, Instagram and two places on Facebook, Turf Bloggers (of which I'm the last-ish member, sometimes Ted) and The Turk Blog.

30 August 2025; The Nashville Derby G3; 1 5/16 miles on firm turf

The bet prerace was for a $2 Exacta 11/12/8 OVER 11/12/8/2/5/1 for $30.

12 Over 5 paid $99.04 on a $30 bet or $69.04 Net.  Not too shabby.  The Turk doesn't brag, but that is the type of success this blog consistently delivers, but again, it's not scalable, I spent 2+ hours blogging just this race.  A lot of time goes into each race I handicap.  When I'm at the track, I can't do this so I have a very different style of tote board handicapping I do there.

This blog use to be a Superfecta and Super High Five Blog years ago.  While that ain't my bag anymore, I had the Super nailed here which paid $132.74 on ten cents, I always bet $1 Supers so you get the idea.

Handicap. There is no substitution to learning and gaining experience in this game.  Wimbledon Hawkeye was a 12-1 morning line.  IGNORE and don't even look at the Morning Line.  I print my PP's without it (thank you DRF Formulator for allowing that option- unsolicited and non sponsored plug).  Why did he go off ~ 2-1, because the betting public is smarter.  This horse had 1 turf win in 10 starts BUT seven combined Place and Shows. He was clearly improving in his euro Timeform ratings.  My placement of Burnham Square (13.5-1) and Hill Road (13.5-1), both 6-1 Morning Lines highlights again to take your own view, not the view of an overworked and hurried handicapper for DRF.

Gold Phoenix (Ire), four straight Del Mar Handicaps is just an incredible story.  I didn't realize it was four because I just have his last ten races with me as I'm handicapping, but wow!  That truly is special and really encapsulates why I love older horses and turf racing is general, as its so rare to get such longevity and brilliance with dirt runners. I miss Brass Hat and Commentator just to name a few, they just don't come around very often

I was betting against what I thought was going to be a three-peat for the 7 YO, but he won and I'm happy to lose that one.  I think my handicap was pretty spot on and the Superfecta was in there to be had along with the exacta.

As a handicapper, it's about current form to me.  Gold Phoenix (Ire) sort of defies that in many ways, but he's an except to the rule.  I will be keeping my eyes out again for Stay Hot, Atitlan and Truly Quality, as all three acquitted themselves well.

The Nomination Is In: The Del Mar Handicap G2

Mr. George Strawbridge Jr: Augustin Stables/Buffalo Sabres Hall of Fame

Welcome Friends to The Turk Blog, where I specialize in Turf Handicapping and Exacta Betting. Today I'm primarily focused on the big prize money at Kentucky Downs, but with an eye towards the Breeders' Cup I'd be remiss in not looking closely at The Del Mar Handicap G2. You can find my blog for Kentucky Down's Nashville Derby here.

Do what you love.  I love Turf racing and luckily I know I'm good at it.  How do I know that?  I keep stats.  Do you keep stats of your own hits and misses?  I didn't start keeping good records until I started this blog.  When I was younger I was more instinctive.  When I started keeping stats I realized I was good at Turf and Synthetic, terrible at dirt sprints and turf sprints, and much better with 4 YO and Up.  My stats varied widely between tracks too.  I learned what I was naturally biased towards and I doubled down on it.

I still love a good dirt race, and I'm not terrible at it.  One thing I have done for a long time is to try to insulate myself from the biases of others.  When I do handicap these big dirt events, I know very little about these horses except what I read on the Past Performances and what my eyes tell me on video. Try it, really.  It doesn't mean I'm not a fan of the sport.  Of course I get misty eyed thinking about Cody's Wish and the back story, but I'm better if I block that out.  Anyways, Lets get after this!

Del Mar turf routes over 8 furlongs: the middle posts (roughly posts 3–6) win the most. Outside posts (7 and wider) drop off sharply, and they’re especially poor at 1 1/8 miles. Inside draws (1–3) can be very good on days when the temporary rail is set far out (e.g., 30 feet), but with no rail the distribution is more balanced across the middle. Practical takeaway: upgrade posts 3–6 for Del Mar turf routes over a mile, be cautious with 7+, and give extra credit to 1–3 when the rail is way out.

So what to make of all of this? To me it's about the horses coming off of long layoffs: Atitlan (26 May 2025), True Quality (8 Feb 2025) and how they fare versus horses heating up with 2nds off like Balnikhov(Ire) (27 July 2025) and Gold Phoenix (Ire) (9 Aug 2025).

5/1/4/9 OVER 5/1/4/9/11/7 a $2 Exacta for $40. That's just a first idea, I'd like to get that below $24. Have fun friends, Turk Out!

The Nomination Is In: The Grade 3 Nashville Derby at Kentucky Downs (Day 2 of Meet) and Post Race Review with Video $500,000 Tapit on Opening Day.

Welcome Friends to The Turk Blog, and day 2 of the Kentucky Downs meet.  For Day 1 I handicapped The Tapit $500,000.  Some observations pop out:

Lagynos, wow!  Track record.  The screenshot captures the moment he breaks free and runs off with it.

What did I do well.
  • I nailed handicapping the winner.  The key to exotic betting is being able to pick winners.
  • Am I smart or is the track handicapper dumb?  Lagynos is 8-1 Morning Line.  I don't look at Morning Lines as it adds bias.  Even adjusted to remove the takeout, he adjusted to 10.5-1.  I handicap a fair odds value of 5-1 and put him as the chalk in my base handicap.  But what happens? He gets bet down to 3-2.
  • The seven scratches didn't help.  What's the point of the "Also Entered" if they are just going to scratch?
  • It's a hard game to beat.

The Nomination Is In: The $500,000 Tapit at Kentucky Downs

Welcome friends to The Turk Blog, where I handicap Turf Races and build exacta bets.  That's it, that's all I do.  I don't break news articles, I don't get interviews with the connections, no human interest stories, just handicapping (primarily) older horses running (primarily) over a route of grass.  Why?  It's what I like and after tracking ROI for 10+ years, it's what I'm good at.  I handicap in a complete vacuum to outside bias. I don't look at morning lines (until after I've handicapped), I don't read about the races in advance.  I study the DRF Formulator Past Performances and Race Charts and I watch recent/relevant video to help make the data more visual.  I like older horses because they are more of a known quantity, with plenty of data to analyze.  I like big fields and I like to bet against favorites  who still lose roughly 60% of the races they run.

Kentucky Downs is my favorite turf track in the United States.  It use to be Arlington, but we know how that ended.  While its a short meet, I look forward each year to the chaos of large purses/big fields and just the excitement that this track brings.

From the 2024 Meet:

There were 76 races in total.

  • Favorites won 25 races, which is about 32.9 percent.
  • Favorites finished second 13 times and third 7 times, for 20 additional in-the-money finishes.
  • In total, 45 out of 76 favorites finished on the board, which is 59 percent.
There were 6 odds-on favorites during the meet.
  • Of those, 3 won, giving odds-on favorites a 50 percent win rate.

For clarification, a favorite is the horse with the lowest odds in a race. It is considered the most likely winner by the betting public. A favorite does not have to be very short-priced. It could be 2-1, 5-2, 3-1, or any other price, as long as no other horse has lower odds.

An odds-on favorite is a special type of favorite whose odds are less than even money, below 1-1. This means you must risk more than you stand to gain. Common odds-on lines are 4-5, 3-5, or 1-5. At 4-5, for example, you would need to bet $5 to win $4, plus your $5 stake back.

In short: all odds-on favorites are favorites, but not all favorites are odds-on. A horse can be the favorite at 2-1 or 3-1 without being odds-on.

Enough of Professor Turk, lets get to degenerate gambler Turk!

While not relevant for handicapping today's race, I find it's always important to watch a race on this course to remind myself of the uniqueness of the track.

Weather should be dry and turf firm.  Track website is substandard for horseplayers, but I think you'll be able to find scratches and changes here.

Tapit 500K;  1 Mile 70 Yards on Turf

I have some charts that I use to help me visualize the Tomlinson numbers for Turf and Dirt as well as Early and Late Pace. I hope you find them useful.

What to do with all of this?  You'll see in my Fair Odds Chart it's pretty clear I don't have a clue about this race or these horses.  I clearly don't view some of these horses the same way the Morning Line does, which is OK, you have to learn to trust your own skill, even if that means you have to admit you saw it wrong sometimes.

I don't think I'm going to bet tomorrow.  I'm going to watch the races and compare my views of my base handicap to the results and see if I can't calibrate myself before the weekend.  If I want to bet, I can see a really simple Exacta:  $2 Bet 14/5 OVER 14/5 13, 9,3,6,7 for $24.

Trust thyself, handicappers.

And the following is a good overview of the track itself.

Post Race Review with Video: The Del Mar Oaks G1

Welcome Friends to The Turk Blog, where I focus on turf runners and exacta betting.

Know Thy Self!  I should know to avoid 3 YOs.  My ROI tells me to avoid them, but I do like getting a feel for the next crop of up and comers.  Why do I avoid 3 YO's?  So much uncertainty and so little actual performance that can be quantified.

Velocity.  I noted the last race at Dmr, a 1 1/16 that she rallied off of to finish late.  I also noted the 75 Beyer, the fact it was her fourth start, her only graded stakes start, a G3, she faltered at 6.5f, I noted the distance Tomlinson was 3rd best, and her post position of 3 wins quite a bit of turf races at this distance since 2022 (2nd most behind Post 4).  I thought she had a legitimate chance to finish top 3, but win a Grade 1.  Didn't see that coming BUT the breadcrumbs were there for those with better eyes.  Hard to dislike the 35-1 odds on a high class, last time winner at Dmr.

Things we got right?  Didn't believe Thought Process deserved being bet down that low and also didn't believe a front runner could run on an extra 660 feet against this field.  Got that right.

Believed in Lush Lips (GB).  Again shows the frivolity of looking at Morning Lines, as the betting public got all the dogs right and bet Lush Lips down hard.  9th start for the shipper who had at least a track record of graded stakes competitiveness, losing twice to the same day Saratoga Alabama G1  winner, Nitrogen. Dirt and Turf Graded Stakes winner Nitrogen is impressive BTW.  I have to think savvy gamblers looked at that Alabama result 3 hours earlier and rethought Lush Lips (GB).

My gamble was on Firenze Flavor.  Too far back and maybe needs more distance.  Too big a stretch for me.

It's ok not to win.  Learn something from every race and every handicap.  Patterns repeat, look for them.  I've been doing this a very long time and I'm still learning.

Also, what a great ride Jock R. Gonzalez for Trainer M. McCarthy.  he saved ground the whole way and when the rail opened, he threaded a needle and took it.

The Nomination Is In: The Del Mar Oaks G1

Hand ride for Thought Process G2 San Clemente

Welcome Friends to The Turk Blog, where I usually specialize in handicapping older horses running over a route of grass, with which I turn into exacta bets.  Simple premise.  Today I'm handicapping the Del Mar Oaks, and while only 3 YOs, I don like to get some looks at the next up and comers.  My issue with the younger horses is they lack data.  The more information as a handicapper you have, the better.  With younger horses I modify my key angles slightly and I focus on class, wins at the distance, wins at the track, trainer intentions.  27 wins combined for the 11 starters.  3 Graded Stakes Wins.  Best late speed is Edge of Mali (IRE) at 107 followed by Firenze Flavor at 102.  Best early speed is Thought Process at 116 and the next closest is Slick (Ire) at 97.  Slick (Ire) and Lush Lips have the best Turf Tomlinson's in mid 380's while Striver is best Distance Tomlinson at 409.

Let's take a look at Thought Process and her dominant win in the one mile San Clemente.  Don't underestimate the power of the extra 660 feet today, but no one was catching her on this day.

19 July 2025:  Dmr; The San Clemente G2;  1 Mile over Firm Turf

Casalu gave good chase running well past his Turf and Distance Tomlinson's.  Tomlison's have thier place, especially in these younger horses.

Tomlinson Numbers were created by pedigree experts Leon Rasmussen and Leon Tomlinson in the 1970s and 1980s. They were designed to give horseplayers a quick numerical measure of how a horse’s breeding suggests it will perform under certain racing conditions such as turf, dirt, distance, or wet tracks.

The numbers are calculated from pedigree data. They look at how successful a horse’s ancestors—particularly the sire and dam—have been under a given condition. This produces a three-digit figure, where higher numbers mean the pedigree shows more strength for that surface or distance. For example, a turf Tomlinson of 380 or higher suggests strong turf ability in the pedigree, while a 250 would suggest little turf influence.

The Daily Racing Form began including Tomlinson Numbers in Past Performances in 1991. They quickly became popular with bettors because they help answer unknown questions, such as whether a horse trying turf for the first time might be bred for it, or whether a sprinter stretching out in distance may have the stamina in its bloodlines. They are especially useful for first-time starters, surface switches, and stretch-outs.

There are limits to Tomlinson Numbers. They do not measure actual ability, fitness, or class—only what the pedigree suggests. A horse with a high Tomlinson may still run poorly, and a horse with a low one may still succeed if its individual talent or training outweighs its bloodlines.

Remember what we are trying to do here, two separate tasks:

  • Handicap (place in order) who should win.
  • Exacta Bet:  Who can beat my top win candidate who might finish in second.
That's how I look at the races.  I'm not a fan boy (although I do love the horses and I have my favorites) but I am a degenerate (not really) gambler who is trying to beat the track with highly slanted odds in the house's direction.  You don't do that betting chalk.  You also don't do that when you don't think anyone can beat the chalk.  I don't see Thought Process as unbeatable, it's her 8th start, she's won 5 , 3 of 4 at Del Mar, 5 of 6 on Turf, bullet work at 5f.  That's impressive, but we want to beat her.  The Tomlinson's coupled with other information from race charts and past performances, plus video, informs me of who might.

Let's get after it!

The turf will be Firm with low chance of rain.  You'll find scratches and changes here.

Dmr; The Del Mar Oaks G1; 1 1/8 Miles on Firm Turf

Thought Process, shouldn't be pressed to hard early, and she should bein the lead without too much effort.  Can she hold on? 660 feet.  1 extra furlong. I'm looking at the group of Firenze Flavor, Casalu, Lush Lips (GB) and Will Then to challenge early and late.  I like the two, Firenze Flavor and Casalu to win with Thought Process, Lush Lips or Will Then to Place.  8/9 OVER 8/9/10/5/7 a $2 Bet for $16.

I said it, I think they will catch Thought Process.  Am I convinced, not really, but that's my angle.  If you believe in the horse, then switch gears and add some of the longer odd deep closers to the place position, single Thought Process OVER Firenze Flavor and Will Then, a $2 Exacta for $4.  Not a bad play.

Post Race Analysis of the Colonial (err Arlington) Million.

Fort Washington Over Grand Sonata and Integration

Welcome Friends to The Turk Blog.  Remember, this is a no brag zone, but it's not bragging to say I've been fire over the grass with the exacta's, taking down favorites left and right.  My no favorite Exacta Bet cost $18 but paid $88.  These are the bets that drive ROI for the horseplayer.

Again, another race with a better than even money favorite fell to Show.  60%  of the time the favorites lose.  It's an angle I love to exploit.  I do everything in my power to avoid bias in my handicapping and betting.  The pretty girls on FanDuel TV can be compelling, the ex-Jock can be compelling, but its all bias.  I find I'm more successful not knowing if the horse is named after someone who's sick or died, or a feel good  news item about the connections.  I'm human and I love a good human interest story (I cried a lot about the story behind Cody's Wish- but I still bet against him!) just not if it brings bias to me.  Anyways, looking at a wide sample size we ask ChatGPT  how often the favorite Wins-Places or Shows.

For turf racing only in the U.S., the numbers for post-time favorites shift slightly lower than Dirt because:

  • Turf races often have larger fields and more competitive entries than dirt races.

  • Pace dynamics can create more upsets, but the favorite still performs strongly.

📊 Typical U.S. turf racing averages (compiled from multi-year Equibase & DRF summaries):

  • Win: ~33–34%

  • Place (1st or 2nd): ~55–57%

  • Show (1st, 2nd, or 3rd): ~71–73%

That means favorites on turf finish in the top two a little more than half the time, slightly less than the overall racing average (≈58–60%).

9 August 2025; Cnl; The Arlington Million G1 on Firm Turf.

With all due respect, Mystik Dan didn't deserve $3.7-1 odds.  He's done nothing on Turf and for a $4.5 MM lifetime winner, looks washed at Grade 1 level.  An emotionless gambler needs to look for these angles, over bet name recognition horses.  I think Integration is a good horse, a horse for the course, but he's not Secretariat!  Those odds were too short at $0.6-1.

I said I didn't think Vesting (Ire) scratch meant anything to the pace, and it didn't.  I liked Cairo but he was so wet in his shoulders I was not shocked how he flattened.  Time Song and Runaway Storm are still running and I rightly tossed them.  That left Fort Washington and Grand Sonata, both of whom I thought were overlooked and in great form.

Keep handicapping, keep looking for the patterns that repeat over and over and over.  As your handicapping improves, your bet construction will improve.

A simple bet construction I offered up prerace paid $88 on an $18 bet.  I had the superfecta in my handicap as well, but that's a drug I avoid these days!
